Looking for a Good Grow Box? Ask These Questions Before You Buy!

If you’ve spent any time looking to buy a grow box, you already know that there are a ton of options available -- each with a variety of features suited to different kinds of growing needs. It can be rough trying to sift through all the various possibilities and setups. Here are a few questions to ask yourself that will help you sort the worthy grow boxes from the useless before you buy.

Is Your Growing Box Stealthy?

For many of us, stealth is a top priority for any home grow box operation. This means no smell, no noise, no noticeable electricity drain, safe wiring and an inconspicuous design. Filtering the grow box list with these criterion alone will eliminate three-quarters of your options.

What Kind of Growbox Is the Best One for You?

Ok, so you’ve found some growboxes that aren’t going to give you away. Your next task is to further filter your grow box list by selecting which of the many types out there is going to be best suited to your individual needs.

Your first choice is whether you want to do hydroponics or soil. The quality will be the same either way, but a good hydroponic system will produce a higher yield faster. Hydroponics does take more time, knowledge and investment however, so soil may be the way to go if you’re short on any of the above factors. The next decision is size. Do you want a small grow box that can tuck away in a corner somewhere or a larger grow cabinet that will better suit your yield needs?

Whether or not you’d like a cloning chamber is another consideration. Including one can allow you to double your annual yield and save your plant genetics, but it takes up grow space for flowering plants. Many growers end up getting two grow boxes – one with a cloning chamber and one without. You’ll also need to decide whether you want to go with LED or HID lighting. Many old growers swear by HPS/MH and yes, it does work very well. The downside is the enormous annual energy and maintenance cost and high heat output. LED technology has come a long way in recent years, and is now capable of producing the same high quality yield at a fraction of the cost and maintenance of HID lighting.

What Additional Features Does the Grow Box Company Provide?

Along with all of the above considerations, there are a couple of other factors that can help you decide which grow box to go with. One is the option to buy a fully automated grow box. All hydroponic systems require a daily adjustment of PH when plants are blooming, so if you’re going with hydroponics and don’t want too much hassle, an automatic grow box may be the way to go. Another nicety is a water cooler in your hydroponic grow box. Keeping your main reservoir temperature low greatly decreases the chance of root rot, PH swings and surface scum. Last but not least, there’s a lot to get right when starting your own grow, so it’s wise to use a company that offers lifetime technical and grow support, so there’s someone to call if you need a helping hand.
